Hyundai Grand i10 Overview

Hyundai Grand i10 has replaced the i10 in the international markets but India being a vast and budget-concerned market, Hyundai decided to keep both the cars in the market, and put the Grand i10 between the current i10 and i20, filling the gap between the two vehicles. The Grand i10 gained popularity just after reaching the market and currently is doing best sales figure on the sales chart. The Grand, as it is popularly known as, follows the Hyundai trademark Fluidic design language strongly. The car looks slightly bigger than i10 and more like i20. The Grand i10 looks very premium and has currently is one of the best hatchbacks offered in this segment.
Hyundai Grand i10 Overview
The Grand i10 incorporates many futuristic features. Hyundai has modified the car especially for India by giving the vehicle bigger rear windows to minimize the claustrophobic feel as the rear seats are used more in India than in European countries. The brilliant-looking diamond-cut alloy wheels look sharp and make the exterior of the vehicle even more premium to look at. Hyundai has used high-quality materials on the inside and outside of the car. Enter the vehicle and there is the dual tone scheme. The plastic quality is very premium. Hyundai sells both petrol and diesel engines with the Grand i10, unlike the old i10 in which the diesel engine was missing. The petrol unit is the tried-and-tested 1.2-litre Kappa VTVT while the diesel is powered by a newly developed 1.2-litre U2 engine. On the inside, the car gets many first-in-the-segment features, like 1 GB internal memory, which can be used to store music. There are also features like Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and dual air bags for the driver and the co-driver to keep the occupants safe in an event of accident. Hyundai Grand i10 is available in five variants in both petrol and diesel but most of the features listed in the car are reserved for the top-end Asta model. Important features like seat height adjuster and headrest adjuster are standard only in the Asta variant. Also, important safety features like the Anti-lock Braking System is available only in the top variant while two airbags (driver and front passenger) are available in the top three variants now. The top model also gets rear spoiler, which is missing from the other variants. The brilliant-looking diamond-cut alloy wheels also come as standard with the top model and Sportz(O) AT.

Hyundai Grand i10 Interior

Inside the car, a lot of beige has been used across all the variants for that premium feel. To top that, Hyundai has mated the beige color smartly with the black color, so the places which are more accessible to hands are covered in black to save them from getting dirty quickly. The interior also gets blue illumination, which looks brilliant at night. The blue illumination makes the car look very premium from the inside, and the feature is standard across all the variants. Hyundai has also used the space in the car very smartly, and has put map pockets in the front and rear seats of the car for keeping papers and other small things. There are pockets behind the front passenger seat as well. The pockets are missing from the base Era variant though. Hyundai’s flowing design follows the car everywhere and even the interiors are designed keeping the Fluidic theme in mind.
Hyundai Grand i10 Interior
The door handles are curved, and are chrome painted in the Sportz, Sportz(O) and Asta models for the premium feel. Chrome is also visible on the gear knob and parking lever tip of the Sportz and Asta models. The top variant Asta gets the leather-wrapped steering wheel, which feels amazing to hold and feel. The centre display of the Grand i10 looks soothing and very futuristic. The top of the line variants Sportz(O) and Asta now offers 7-inch infotainment screen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In addition it also doubles up as a display for reverse parking camera. The Sportz get a 5-inch screen with no support for Android Auto and CarPlay. Era and Magna do not get a touch screen. Even the base variant gets the tachometer, which is very important for shifting gears correctly. The driver infotainment gets many warning lamps and indicators, which are standard across all the variants. The manual version of the car gets gearshift indicators for those perfectly-timed shifts for better fuel efficiency and more power. The door and tailgate ajar lamp saves the car from getting damaged and prevents accidents. There is also a low fuel indicator and driver seatbelt warning lamp across every variant. Multi Information Display or better known as MID brings many information from the car to the driver at one place. There is a digital clock, dual trip meter, and uncommon features like average vehicle speed and engine running time, which helps a lot during long trips. Hyundai Grand i10 has a good audio system with support for USB, Bluetooth and Aux-in available across Sportz, Sportz(O) and Asta variants with a 4-speaker set-up. The leather-wrapped steering wheel in the top model also features the audio, bluetooth voice recognition controls for easy access. Convenience has taken a special attention with the Grand i10. Every variant gets motor-driven electric power steering for smooth drives around the city and does not take much effort to manoeuvre the vehicle. All the variants also get manual AC with heater, tinted windows and power outlets. Hyundai has really taken serious steps to make the vehicle very convenient, and the power outlets on the front and rear show that effort of the company. There are also power windows across all the models. The base version Era misses out on rear power outlets and power windows though. There are also electrically-adjustable outside mirrors across all the variants except Era which offers manual controls. There are also rear AC vents, a passenger and vanity tray, the base model gets deprived of these features as well. The Sportz and Asta models get the cooled glove box, push button start/stop and tilt steering. Driver seat height adjustment and adjustable rear seat headrests are exclusive to the top end Asta model only.

What do we think about Hyundai Grand i10?

Hyundai Grand i10 is a very affordable car and by all means is the best choice in its segment. The Grand i10 has a long list of features, which look very good and inviting on paper. The base model somehow misses out on few key things like ABS and passenger airbag. This mid-sized hatchback looks very pleasing to the eyes and comparatively looks better than most cars on the road. The Hyundai Grand i10 packs almost every feature needed in a car in a compact package. With the segment-first features, like the integrated memory, Hyundai has surely attracted many tech-savvy buyers towards the new model.
What do we think about Hyundai Grand i10?
The elegant-looking diamond-cut alloys make the car even more appealing. Important safety features, like the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and passenger front airbag, are missing in the standard list, and they come only as an option with higher variants. Hyundai has surely made a point on including all the features in the vehicle but not all are available with the Era or the Magna model. Even with the missing features, the Hyundai Grand i10 is a good choice in the segment and the sales figure of the car just puts concrete to our thoughts.

Hyundai Grand i10 Exterior

Hyundai designs its cars brilliantly and the Grand i10 is no different. The Grand i10 follows Hyundai’s elegant Fluidic design language strictly. The car looks beautiful, elegant and premium than any other car in its segment. The Grand i10 matches the design of its bigger cousin Hyundai i20 closely but is more compact than i20. The Grand, as the company likes to call it, is focused on the youth of the country and it does not disappoint. The elegant-looking vehicle has sculptured bodylines, which makes the car very soothing to look at. The subtle crease, which starts just before the front door and connects to the tail lamps, makes the car elegant while the strong-shaped crease on the bottom of the front and rear doors makes the car look very aggressive. Following the Hyundai design language, Grand i10 gets sweeping headlamps, making the front fascia very strong. The fog lamps have been placed very conveniently in the especially-designed dams with black inserts to give it a manly look.
Hyundai Grand i10 Exterior
The Grand i10 also gets roof rails in the mid and top variants, which adds to the sporty look. The Grand i10 looks very sporty and the rear spoiler makes things even better. Premium as it can get, Hyundai also offers optional diamond-cut alloy wheels on the top-of-the-line Asta variant and Sportz(O) AT. The Magna and Sportz variants get full size wheel covers, while the base Era model gets just the steel rims. Hyundai has also made a point by equipping body coloured bumpers with all variants. The base model misses out on body-coloured door handles, tail gate and mirrors. Hyundai has made a lot of things exclusive to the top-end variants. The micro roof antenna does not come checked with the base Era model. The Sportz and Asta models get the chrome dipped outside door handles for a premium look. The waist-line moulding, which saves the car from a lot of scratches, is also missing out from the base Era, Magna and Sportz models. The sporty-looking roof rails come as standard only with the Sportz and Asta models. The premium-looking indicators on the outside rear view mirrors also come as standard only with the Sportz and Asta models. Hyundai has made the Grand i10 brilliant but a lot of things are yet missing on the lower variants. Since the car offers a lot on paper, many important features, like ABS and passenger airbag etc. take a back seat in case of the lower variants.

Hyundai Grand i10 Engine & Transmission

Hyundai introduced the car in both petrol and diesel engine options. The tried and tested petrol engine - 1.2-litre VTVT engine comes from the i10 and i20 models. This engine used to do its duty on the i10 and is still available with the bigger i20 model. The 4-cylinder engine has 16 valves and has a displacement of 1197 cc. Working on full load, the engine produces a maximum of 83 bhp at 6000 rpm and maximum torque of 114 Nm at 4000 rpm. The petrol powered engine is smooth and frugal and does the job very nicely.
The diesel versions carry the newly developed second generation U2 CRDi technology. With a displacement of 1186cc, the new engine has 3-cylinder with 12 valves. The diesel mill generates a maximum of 74bhp at 4000rpm and the torque figure peaks at 190 Nm spread across a wide range of 1750-2250 rpm. Hyundai bolts a 5-speed manual transmission with the Grand i10 on both petrol and diesel models. The Korean giant in order to offer a wide range to the customers also fits an automatic gearbox with the Grand i10.

Hyundai Grand i10 Mileage

Hyundai Grand i10 is a complete package and with the moderate power it comes with, which is better than most of the models in the segment, Hyundai has tuned the engine of the Grand i10 in a very good way. The Hyundai Grand i10 promises to offer an impressive fuel efficiency of 24 kmpl with the diesel engine, which is among the best if not the best in the segment. And with an average fuel efficiency of 18.9 kmpl with the 1.2 petrol Kappa2 engine its at par with other hatches in this segment. The real world conditions might bring down the mileage by about 15-30%, but even after driving on moderate speeds, the fuel efficiency remains commendable.

Hyundai Grand i10 Braking and Safety

The braking prowess of the Grand i10 is nothing less than impressive. The car comes with front disc brakes and rear drum options. The brakes have a good bite and can bring the car to stop within a small distance. On the top variant, Asta, Hyundai offers one of the most advanced anti-lock braking system, which further brings down the stopping distance and is helpful in tricky situations.
Hyundai Grand i10 Braking and Safety
There is standard driver airbag available with all variants of the Grand i10. However, the company offers the passenger airbags with the top-end models only, which does show a highlight in the bill. Talking about safety, the Grand gets day/night mirror across all the variants except the base Era model. Hyundai also gives rear defogger as a part of equipment with the top variants. Hyundai provides a smart key with the Asta trims, which are convenient to use can be used to unlock the doors which work based on proximity to the key. The Magna version and other lower variants get standard keyless entry while Era does not offer keyless entry. The engine immobilizer, which surely reduces a lot of thefts, is standard across all the variants.

Hyundai Grand i10 Performance and Handling

Hyundai Grand i10 performs pretty well on both city and highway roads. It’s a charm to drive the car and it can take quick turns in heavy city traffic. The Grand i10 runs on front McPherson strut with coil spring and the rear is the coupled torsion beam axle with coil spring. As a Hyundai trademark, they always set the car with soft suspensions.
The Hyundai Grand i10 too comes with soft suspension set-up, which increases the ride quality on the bumpy city roads, but at the same time, at high speeds, the car rolls a bit but without losing control. High-speed manners may not be as impressive as some of the other cars, but it’s not appalling either. The steering of Hyundai Grand i10 is very nice to hold and has little feedback from the road. The handling is not very sharp, but the car is not meant to be a great handler, but rather a perfect city car with great ease of use, and it does that very well in that department.

Hyundai Grand i10 Competitors

Hyundai Grand i10 enjoys a special position in the market. The car sits between the compact i10 and the premium i20. The Grand i10 competes indirectly with the likes of Ford Figo and Maruti Suzuki Swift. The Grand i10 offers many first-in-class features, which puts the vehicle way ahead of its competitors in the market and with a price tag that can pull many buyers from its competitors, Hyundai Grand i10 has become a true value-for-money vehicle in the country.
